Suminagashi - Japanese Paper Marbling - Ambrose Chan - Pinole Artisans - February 14, 2025

Writer's picture: Nadine LaurentNadine Laurent

Though he considers himself a “dabbler” of various arts & crafts, Pinole Artisans member Ambrose Chan tends to gravitate towards working on pieces that are monochromatic in nature. The majority of his creative output is made using pen and black ink, but on rare occasions - as both a meditative exercise and as a way to break out of established routines, he enjoys suminagashi paper marbling.

Suminagashi (墨流し - translated as “floating ink”) is considered an ancient marbling technique that was first introduced in Japan around the 12th century.

Join us February 14 to learn the basics of this paper marbling technique!
